Parenting

Helping you help your child

Our psychologists and therapists provide helpful support and guidance with parenting.

Parents sometimes bring their child to therapy to find help with emotional, behavioural, or learning difficulties. We can provide your child with a safe place to learn strategies to help them achieve their potential. We work closely with parents to help them learn strategies to support their child’s growth.

We can help parents learn a variety of skills, such as:

  • Communicating effectively with your toddler, child, pre-teen, or teenager
  • Keeping calm when emotions run high
  • Creating a positive, safe space for your sensitive or anxious child
  • Expressing your needs to members of your extended family
  • Learning about attachment styles and how you can foster a healthy, secure attachment with your child
  • Balancing your role as caregiver with your own needs and desires

Our psychologists employ strength-based approaches to parenting aimed at developing healthy attachments, empathy, and enhancing emotional expression and regulation skills in the family.

Help with Specific Parenting Challenges

Help is here

Emotion Coaching

Do you find you are losing control of your emotions in the face of your child’s behaviour or struggles? Our psychologists and therapists teach parents strategies to help parents keep their cool in stressful interactions with their child.

Separation/Divorce

Parenting can be confusing and challenging at the best of times. It is even more challenging during the course of a marital separation or divorce. Our psychologists and therapists can support and guide you on how to co-parent throughout the separation and divorce process. We help parents help their children to navigate changes roles and relationships within the family.

Learning Challenges

For children with learning disabilities or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, we help parents advocate for their child in the public and private school systems. Many of our psychologists and therapists have provided psychoeducational assessment and consultation within the school system. We can identify your child’s learning needs, diagnose any learning disability, and help you navigate the school system so that your child accesses the supports they need.

Sibling Relationships

Having a sister or brother can be a wonderful and/or challenging experience, even as an adult. Kids often struggle in their relationships with siblings, and this struggle can sometimes cause distress or disruption in the whole family. We help parents support their children in managing changes in key relationships within the family.

Behavioural Difficulties

Our psychologists engage parents in problem-solving and supporting their children who show behaviour difficulties at home or at school. Common behavioural issues include difficulty sitting still, problems with attention and concentration, impulsive behaviour, hyperactivity, bed wetting, difficulties with toileting, and problems with social behaviour or communication. We can help!

Anxiety and/or Depression

Anxiety and depression are some of the most common mental health concerns for children and teens. Our psychologists will help you learn practical strategies and tools to help you help your child overcome depression or anxiety. Parents play an essential role in helping their child or teen manage or overcome mood and anxiety disorders. Help is available.
