Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills Training: Level 1 for Clinicians

An Introduction to Using DBT with Individuals and Groups

Course Content

In this seminar, participants with learn and practice the skill modules in DBT including Core Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. You will learn to apply DBT with specific populations such as youth and those with addictions. Delivery will be both through teaching and group skill practice and will prepare clinicians to use skills in both individual and group-based sessions.

The course will include 3 days of training and practice on Wednesday November 15, Wednesday November 22, and Wednesday November 29, 2023 from 12pm-6pm each day.

You can attend in person at our St. Catharines office (274 Fourth Avenue, Unit 4, St. Catharines) or you can attend virtually online.

This course is designed for psychologists and psychotherapists. Attendance requires registration with a licensing or governing body for provision of psychotherapy, or enrollment in a psychotherapy training program.

Materials required include the DBT Skills Manual by Marsha Linehan.

Early bird fee (if registered on or before Nov 1, 2023): $500 +hst.

Jeffrey Sica, M.Sc., Registered Psychotherapist

Jeffrey Sica PsychotherapistJeffrey Sica has been in the field of mental health and addictions for the past 20 years.

A Registered Psychotherapist since 2015, Jeffrey has completed a Masters of Science in Psychology in 2019 focusing on researching experiences of youth in the Niagara Region with the intention of improving services available and addressing gaps in existing supports.  In addition to working at Brookside Psychologists, Mr. Sica is a Program Manager at Quest Community Health Center overseeing primary health care and interdisciplinary teams and previously was a Director of Youth and Family Services at Community Addiction Services of Niagara (CASON). He also previously worked at the Niagara Health System’s New Port Center and as a case manager at the Brain Injury Community Re-entry in St. Catharines.

In therapeutic delivery, Jeffrey has led clinical teams in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and provides evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for trauma, as well as others. He has completed the Non-Profit Leadership Development certification program through Goodman School of Business & Brock University in 2018, and currently provides clinical supervision for Qualifying Registered Psychotherapists and Masters students as well as teaching workshops in DBT, CPT and other evidence-based therapies.

Alexander Laugher, Youth Peer Support Worker

After completing a year of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as a client at Community Addiction Services of Niagara (CASON), Alexander Laugher was hired onto the Youth Services Team at CASON as a Youth Peer Support Worker.

Through his work at CASON, Mr. Laugher has provided Peer Support to youth on an individual and group level. Alexander has worked as a part of the DBT consultation team since 2021 and has facilitated two Youth DBT skills groups, as well as a Multi-family DBT skills group in 2022.

Alexander has also worked as a Peer Support Navigator at Quest Community Health Centre. Working as part of the Niagara Homelessness Emergency Liaison and Peer Support (Niagara HELPS) program, Alexander has worked in the Emergency Department at Niagara Health System since 2020.

Alexander is currently enrolled in his second year of Psychology at Brock University, has been placed on the Dean’s Honours List, and continues to work in the Youth DBT program at CASON and Niagara HELPS program.
